The Ancient Guilds and Liveries of Seething

In the early 9th century the community of Seething founded one of

the great traditions of Britain - the Ancient Guilds and Liveries.

They were originally founded as a way of bringing people within

certain trades or skills together to support each other and to look

after the infirm or weak in their community. Unfortunately, as with

many things, the Ancient Guilds and Liveries along with the

Seething Square Mile were appropriated by the new all powerful

City of London.

The names of the Ancient Guilds and Liveries were replaced by

new names and all fell into disuse even in Seething.

However, the Seething Historical Society working with the BSAA

has begun to piece together the history and slowly some of the

names a being brought back to life. So far we have

The Ancient Guilds of Cheesemakers, Talcum Miners, Taxonomists,

Curriers, Water-Bearers and Sardine Fishers

We hope that the new generation of Seething Folk will each join

a Guild and once again, through their actions, support each other

and look after the infirm or weak in our community

Here are some of their ancient banners

You can see some of the Guilds Banners at the Seething Community Sports Day
